The Abbottabad climb to Thandiani

Getting there

The road climbs three thousand feet in less than an hour. Proper preparation is non-negotiable for a safe ascent.

From Islamabad

From Lahore and Punjab

Take the Hazara Motorway (E-35) to Abbottabad, a fast, comfortable run of about ninety minutes.

From Abbottabad, the hill road climbs the remaining 37 kilometres to the top.

Budget two and a half to three and a half hours door to door, depending on road conditions and how often you stop for the views. You will want to stop for the views.

Join the M-1 towards Islamabad, then the E-35 north. It is a long day's drive; most travellers break it in Abbottabad or arrive at Thandiani by late afternoon.

Without a car?

Vans and hired jeeps run from Abbottabad town. There is no rail link, the nearest stations are Rawalpindi and Havelian.

The hill road

The final ascent from Abbottabad is the part that decides your trip. It is a genuine mountain road, climbing steadily through pine forest, with switchbacks and narrow stretches. Sections are under upgrade, and conditions change with the season and the weather.

This is the classic window: warm days, cold nights, forests at full green.

No. The last reliable fuel station is in Abbottabad. Fill your tank completely before starting the climb.

Major networks have decent signal near the main bazaar, but coverage drops off significantly on the deeper forest trails.

While standard sedans can make the climb in dry weather, high-clearance vehicles are highly recommended during monsoon or winter.

What should I pack?

Layers, whatever the month. Thandiani is reliably ten degrees cooler than the plains and cold after sunset even in high summer. Proper walking shoes if you plan to leave the road. A power bank and downloaded maps; mobile signal comes and goes.

There are no ATMs at Thandiani. Withdraw in Abbottabad if you need, or withdraw enough as best practice when you start your journey, wherever that is.

What are the food options in Thandiani?

Food options at the top are simple and seasonal, a small bazaar, local dhabas, and whatever your accommodation cooks. Many travellers carry supplies up from Abbottabad. Whatever you carry up, carry back down; waste collection on the mountain is minimal, and the forest is the reason you came.
