Things to do in Thandiani.
Thandiani does not entertain you. It has no chairlift, no amusement strip, no queue for anything. What it has is altitude, forest, silence and one of the widest mountain panoramas in the Galiyat, and a handful of ways to spend days inside all four.
Walk to the viewpoints.
The ridge-top clearings are the heart of a Thandiani visit. On a clear day the horizon runs from the Pir Panjal range across Kashmir to the mountains of Kaghan and Kohistan, and after rain, when the haze lifts, as far as the snows above Swat. Go at dawn or in the last hour of light, the middle of the day flattens everything the mountains do best.

The pine and fir forest around the top is threaded with informal paths and old bridle tracks laid by British foresters, once patrolled on horseback.
None of them require equipment; all of them require decent shoes. Walk quietly and you'll hear the forest before you see it, pheasants in the undergrowth, langurs overhead, wind moving through deodar like slow water.
The route linking Nathia Gali to Thandiani via Miranjani, Dagri and Biran Gali is widely considered the finest long walk in the Galiyat: two to three days of ridge and forest, passing colonial-era rest houses, through pine reserves deep enough to hold leopard. It is remote, genuinely wild, and best done with a local guide. Our full route guide is in the Journal.
In deep winter the ridge becomes another country: metre-deep snow, empty forest, absolute quiet.
It is the least visited and most memorable season, for travellers prepared for it. Read the winter guide before attempting the road.

HIGH ALTITUDE
Slow down on purpose.
The honest advice: the best thing to do at Thandiani is less. Read on a verandah. Watch cloud fill the valley and drain out again. Drink tea outdoors in June while the plains cook at forty degrees.
People have been coming up this ridge to do precisely this for a hundred and fifty years. They were right.

ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL
Day trips and winter snow.
Thandiani remains accessible for families throughout the milder summer months. Well-marked paths near the main ridge provide safe walking options without steep drops, while winter transforms the station into a quiet snow-covered retreat.
Winter Preparation
Snowfall typically begins in late December. Ensure your vehicle has adequate clearance and check road conditions at Kalapani before attempting the climb. It is strongly advised to use snow chains on your tyres and travel only during daylight hours.
