What's happening
The 24.3-kilometre Abbottabad–Thandiani road is partway through a major upgrade under the province's integrated tourism programme, with international funding behind it. The carriageway is being widened substantially, and long sections are being resurfaced. That is excellent news for 2027. For today's traveller, it means active worksites, diversions around machinery, and stretches where the old surface has been broken up ahead of the new one going down.
Driving times this month
From Abbottabad's Thandiani Chowk to the top, allow 90 minutes to two hours depending on works and weather, more after heavy rain, when clearance crews may be dealing with debris on the hill sections. The Islamabad-to-Abbottabad leg on the Hazara Motorway remains fast and easy at around 90 minutes.
Monsoon note
It is July. Afternoon downpours are near-daily, and a wet, half-built mountain road deserves respect. Morning departures are strongly advised, and if the forecast shows a heavy system, move your trip rather than test it.
