Three hill stations, one ridge system, three completely different weekends. Here is the comparison nobody publishes because most sites want to sell you all three.
Murree
Murree is the institution: the most developed, the easiest to reach, the fullest calendar of food, shopping and activity. It is also, by an enormous margin, the most crowded, on summer weekends and snow days, the Mall functions less like a hill station than a festival. Choose Murree for convenience, company and infrastructure. Do not choose it for quiet.
Nathia Gali
Nathia Gali is the middle path and the Galiyat's favourite child: genuinely beautiful, well served by hotels and restaurants, gateway to the Mukshpuri and Miranjani hikes. Its success is its pressure, peak-season traffic and construction have taken a toll on the calm that made its name. Choose Nathia Gali for a first Galiyat trip, established comforts, and classic day hikes.
Thandiani
Thandiani is the outlier: the highest of the three at 2,750 metres, the furthest from the motorway, the least developed, and the emptiest. No mall road, no chairlift, no queue. Simple guest houses, camping pods, a small bazaar and an enormous amount of forest. The road up is currently mid-upgrade, which filters the crowds further. Choose Thandiani if the mountain itself, not the town on it, is what you're driving for.
The quick verdict
First family trip with mixed ages and comfort needs: Nathia Gali.
Group weekend wanting buzz: Murree.
Couples, walkers, photographers, readers, and anyone whose favourite sound is none: Thandiani.
One ridge-runner's tip: they connect. The old walking route from Nathia Gali to Thandiani through the Dagri forest is the finest long walk in the Galiyat, covered in full in our trek guide.
