Thandiani is one of the few mountains within weekend range of Islamabad that still feels earned. Here is a plan that works.
Saturday, 7:00
Leave Islamabad early. The Hazara Motorway makes short work of the plains; you want to be turning off at Abbottabad by 8:30. Fuel, cash (the last ATMs of your trip), and breakfast in town.
9:00
Begin the climb. The 24-kilometre hill road takes longer than the map suggests, treat the drive as part of the trip. The transition is the show: pine appearing around 1,800 metres, the air through the window changing character, the plains falling away behind.
11:30
Arrive, check in, and resist the urge to nap. Walk instead, the ridge-top clearings are a ten-minute stroll, and arriving legs need stretching.
13:00
Lunch simple and local: dhaba daal, fresh roti, mountain tea. Set expectations accordingly and you'll be delighted.
15:00–18:00
The main event. Pick one forest track and walk it slowly. In late afternoon the light comes sideways through the pines and the birds start their second shift. Be back at a west-facing viewpoint by 17:30, sunset over the Hazara hills is the reason you slept up here instead of driving down.
Sunday, 5:00
Yes, five. Dawn at 2,750 metres is cold in July and unforgettable in every month: the Kashmir ranges cut out of paper, valleys full of cloud below you. This hour is the whole trip.
8:00
Long breakfast. 10:00. One more short walk or simply a verandah and a book. 12:00. Start down, descending before the afternoon build-up of cloud and traffic, back in Islamabad by mid-afternoon.
What to skip: trying to "see everything." Thandiani has no checklist. That's the point of it.
